"When women remember to return their blood to the Earth, men will remember to cry and will no longer need to spill blood in war." - Ancient Hopi Proverb

Rangda is a child-eating Witch Goddess of dark spirits found in Balinese traditions.

She is closely associated with Durga, the Hindu Goddess of protection, strength, motherhood, destruction and wars that, pleased by Rangda's drive and devotion, burned away her mortal essence and granted her immortality and full dominion over the demons, thus making her become a Goddess.

She is depicted as a mostly nude old woman, with long and unkempt hair, pendulous breasts, and claws, that easily remind us of Kali, the Hinduist Black Mother Goddess of destruction, transformation and protection in tribal Hinduism.

Rangda's fate for eternity is to battle Barong, the King of the Spirits and Light. And Barong is the representation of good and, as such, is the yin to Rangda’s yang. They are to engage in a never-ending battle, a battle where neither good nor evil could win.

People call the spirits over which she reigns “evil.”

But Rangda reminds us that without the army of so-called "evil demons", people would not realise the joy brought about her counterpart, Barong, and his own benevolent legion of spirits.

The world must remain in balance, and for so, she does her part in destroying and bringing mischief.

Rangda says in one of her acts:

"Do not wish for a paradise. Utopias are dull places, for how can you know what happiness is if that’s all there is? How would you know peace without the stress to escape from? Paradise, as humans naïvely imagine it, is the epitome of boredom, not pleasure. Does this sound strange to you? It is no more strange than the fact that Christians pray to a demigod dying in agony. There, too, you have the balance of good and evil."

Ultimately, although Rangda is frightening, she is not evil.

As with many wrathful iconic figures, her role is to frighten us to pay attention to our lives—and the divine messengers—so that we practice diligently the path towards liberation.

ABOUT PERIOD ART

My initiation into womanhood happed during a special ceremony back in 2016, when I was on my period.

After a whole night spent dying and being reborn, in mystic visions and experiences of death and life emerging harmoniously together as one, I’ve had the most profound realisation in my heart that really changed my whole perspective over menstruation:

I had to “do” something with my blood.

Throwing it down in the toilet or in the trash on a tampon began to feel wrong to me and I felt an urge to draw with it, to make something beautiful and unique out of it.

I’ve always suffered from very bad period cramps from menarche and since this powerful self-initiation, I began to slowly heal, month after month from all the distress and emotional baggage crystallised in my nervous system that made me HATE being a woman.

As of today, after many years working on female empowerment, self-love, conscious work, healing, meditation and spiritual practices, I can say without doubt that drawing and bringing sacredness to my menstrual blood has been the most healing initiation into womanhood I ever received in this lifetime.

For now my mission is to bring awareness to all my fellow sisters and brothers, about the sacredness that lies within the womb of the Woman.

My most profound desire is to live in a world where women and men recognise the intrinsic beauty and mystery of the Wombman, and through my Art and expression inspire you to inquire or simply enjoy it as a magical manifestation of Life itself.

HOW TO USE IT:

Each painting is perfect for contemplation: blood has its own magical wisdom and reaches the hearts of everyone in ways that are not familiar with logic. You can expect any kind of reaction, from the most positive to the negative but rarely no body reacts to them. This is the power of the blood and womb.

I would advice to place them on an altar where you do spiritual practice or simply place them in a room to enhance its harmony or where there is need to bring healing vibes. You can place them in Red Tents, offer them as a gift for a menarche or for someone who is in need to bring transformation in their lives through rebirth.

IMPORTANT SHIPPING NOTICE:

Prints will be processed and sent from another workshop so when you you order other items from my shop, they will come in separately!
